HOUSTON - US-based biomaterials startup Bucha Bio has raised US$1.1 million in an oversubscribed seed funding round to develop its bid to turn bacterial polymers into sustainable materials and textiles.
The company, which was founded in 2019, wants its bio-based textile, Shorai, to be used as a replacement for animal leather, plastic-based leather alternatives and other oil-based synthetic textiles.
Bucha Bio plans to use the new investment to partner with co-manufacturers to scale production of Shorai with the ambition of bringing the biomaterial to market commercially next year.
