COLOMBO – Workers’ rights organisation the Solidarity Center has produced a report which explores the extent to which Sri Lankan garment workers fall victim to exploitation.
The report – ‘Overworked and Underpaid, Sri Lanka’s Garment Workers Left Hanging by a Thread’ – is informed by survey findings which indicated that factory workers’ rights were being violated, including but not limited to the right to unionise.
The Solidarity Center has said better education needs to be provided as well as ‘awareness-raising’ training so that employees have the knowledge and resources to safely unionise and defend themselves.
