RIO DE JANEIRO - Scientists in Brazil are looking into the feasibility of converting waste sludge from textiles production into a raw material for the traditional ceramic industry.

Researchers at the State University of the Northern Rio de Janeiro hope to both reduce the impact of the textile industry and create a sustainable new raw material to make bricks and roof tiles.

Their study, published in the Journal of Building Engineering, said that sludge from processes in textile production, such as laundering and dyeing, should be treated before disposal because of the chemicals it contained.
