SOUTH ASIA – More than nine million people have put out of work due to restrictions related to COVID-19 in South Asia this year, according to a new policy brief from the International Labour Organization (ILO).
The ASEAN region – which includes major garment manufacturing countries such as Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia – is expected to see a 7.4 per cent decline in working hours due to the pandemic this year.
That is only a slight improvement on 2020 when ASEAN nations, which also include Brunei, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand, recorded working-hour losses of 8.4 per cent.
