MAINE – The US state of Maine has become the country’s first to outline a ban on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
The law will come into play from 2030, though applications deemed “currently unavoidable” at present would be exempt and able to continue using the chemicals.
These substances, often dubbed ‘forever chemicals’, are used to make water repellent textiles and non-stick cookwear, amongst other things, but a strong body of science has highlighted that PFAS can harm human health in high volumes.
