GENEVA – The Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) has published two publications that call for all per- and polyfluorinated substances (PFAS) to be treated as a single class of chemicals within the textile industry.
SAICM, in partnership with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), has published both a report and a policy brief highlighting scientific, policy, and practical reasons for regarding PFAS as a distinct chemical class as a more efficient and effective approach to reducing their harm to human health and the environment.
Maintaining that the "chemical-by-chemical approach" of regulatory frameworks is ill-equipped to address the thousands of PFAS chemicals, the policy brief also includes recommendations for governments and the private sector to control their use.
