SYDNEY - The Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) industry organisation is to form an international coalition to ensure demand for natural fibres is not harmed at the expense of synthetics by new European Union (EU) legislation.
It fears that the EU's Product Environmental Footprint scheme will lead to falling demand for wool and cotton by overlooking their sustainability attributes while failing to penalise the environmental impacts of fossil fuel-based materials.
Angus Ireland, AWI programme manager for fibre advocacy and eco-credentials, said the intention of the EU proposals was to inform consumers about eco-friendly purchases to benefit the planet.
