VIENTIANE - The German Development Ministry is providing funding of US$1.8 million to help around 17,000 garment workers in Laos survive the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The workers will each receive emergency income support of 900,000 LAK (US$96) to mitigate lost income and to help businesses retain employees despite coronavirus-related shutdowns.
Eligible beneficiaries, of whom 85 per cent are women, will receive cash transfers by the end of March. The money is provided by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development with technical support from the International Labour Organization (ILO).
