DHAKA – Garment workers across Bangladesh’s capital of Dhaka have protested in their droves over pay, Eid bonuses and factory closures.
Across Ashulia, Dhamrai, Gazipur, Narayanganj and Chattogram, factory staff from more than 10 sites have staged demonstrations with local reports suggesting that the police have had to intervene.
It’s believed that many have taken issue with the government’s decision to grant workers only 50 per cent of their Eid bonuses, with the rest of their entitlements expected to be paid at a later date.
