HANOI - Vietnam's garment industry has been told to clean up its act in terms of its huge water and energy use and the substantial pollution caused by the discharge of toxic chemicals.

Le Hong Thang, the Director of the Department of Industry and Trade of Hanoi, told producers gathered at a networking event that it was time for them to commit to environmentally-friendly garment production.

Thang said the textile and garment industry was one of Vietnam’s key industries, with export turnover of US$ 30.4 billion last year, accounting for 13 per cent of total exports.
