STUTTGART – The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) has launched a 'world-first' initiative with the European Space Agency (ESA) and artificial intelligence (AI) company Marple to use remote satellite monitoring in organic cotton certification.

Jeffrey Thimm, the manager of the project at GOTS, told Ecotextile News that it would initially involve using multiple sources of data collected by satellite from cotton fields in India to 'train' AI to determine whether or not a cotton field had been farmed organically.

The project, which is expected to produce its first results by the end of the year, could then be used to develop advanced risk assessment technology for organic cotton certification and prevent fraud from the beginning of the supply chain.
