TASHKENT – The Better Cotton initiative has announced the launch of a new programme in Uzbekistan as it looks to further promote the environmental and social benefits of sustainable agricultural practices.
Uzbekistan – which is the world’s sixth largest cotton producer – was last year praised for eradicating long-standing systemic child and forced labour issues from its cotton industry by the International Labour Organization (ILO).
“Building on this success, Better Cotton believes that commercial incentives can help ensure that the newly privatised cotton sector continues to reform and meet international standards,” the non-profit said in a statement.
