AMSTERDAM – A coalition of workers’ rights organisations have launched what’s said to be the largest European campaign on living wages in a bid to influence legislation within the garment sector.
The Good Clothes, Fair Pay campaign – backed by the likes of Clean Clothes Campaign (CCC) – aims to encourage one million European consumers to support the European Citizens Initiative (ECI), which is itself calling for concrete measures to ensure adequate pay.
“The legislation that this campaign calls for is urgent and highly relevant for all garment workers, whether they are based in Europe, Asia, Africa or the Americas. The pandemic has made it painfully clear that without legislation or binding mechanisms, brands will ignore their responsibility as main profiteers from the labour of underpaid women,” noted Mario Ivekovic, of the Croatian labour union, Novi Sindikat.
