PARIS - French prosecutors are investigating fashion companies Uniqlo, Zara owner Inditex, French company SMCP and US footwear brand Skechers for allegedly concealing "crimes against humanity" in China's Xinjiang region.
Three NGOs - Collectif Ethique Sur L’étiquette - a French partner of the Clean Clothes Campaign, anti-corruption group Sherpab and the Uyghur Institute of Europe - and a Uyghur woman who was held at a camp in Xinjiang, filed the complaint with the Paris Judicial Court in April.
The Reuters news agency quoted a "judicial source" as saying: "An investigation has been opened by the crimes against humanity unit within the antiterrorism prosecutor's office following the filing of a complaint."
