LEEDS – A team of researchers have kick-started a first of its kind study in the UK, which will measure the presence of microplastics and textile microfibres within people’s homes.
Teams at the University of Leeds and University of the West of England (UWE) will install sampling devices in houses across Bradford and Bristol to monitor air pollution, and will teach residents how to measure the level of contaminants within each contraption.
Dr Kirsty Pringle, research scientist at the Institute for Climate and Atmospheric Science at the University of Leeds, commented: “In this project we will study microplastics in the air in people’s houses. It is particularly important to understand levels of pollution in our houses because it is where we tend to spend most of our time, so any health effects are likely to be more significant.”
