SEATTLE – With a small pond of fashion marketplaces reaping the financial rewards of increasing brand engagement, it’s wondered whether the likes of Amazon, ASOS, Ebay and Zalando can align in gatekeeping an industry that’s placing greater focus on sustainability.

Zalando recently linked up with the Sustainable Apparel Coalition and the Higg Co to make sustainability assessments mandatory for brands selling on its platform. Meanwhile, the German firm, along with ASOS and Next, decided to axe fast fashion brand Boohoo from their websites over allegations of exploited factory labour.

Now, it’s wondered whether a concerted effort, perhaps in the form of a coalition between fashion marketplaces, can be made to champion brands and retailers making tangible progress in-line with sustainability targets, and incentivise those which aren’t yet doing enough.
