WAKEFIELD – On the first in what will be a series of interactive Ecotextile Talks newscasts, Catharina Martinez-Pardo, principal at market research authority the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), outlined the fashion industry’s potential to bounce back in 2020 as we see global lockdown measures ease and consumer appetite grow once more.
Though BCG figures highlighted a 70-80 per cent decrease in fashion sales between April and May comparative to last year, the organisation provides some hope with predictions that this can be clawed back to just 10-15 per cent by December.
Kate Heiny, the director of corporate responsibility at online retailer Zalando, who joined Martinez-Pardo on the virtual panel, championed the speed and flexibility with which the global economy has weathered these testing few months, and said: “This should be used as the blueprint for how we come out of the crisis and how we make sustainability relevant within our companies if perhaps they had not been previously. Now is the time for a clear sustainability strategy and ambitious goals.”
