SAN FRANCISCO – Workers’ rights NGO Remake has launched a petition demanding US apparel brand Everlane to clear its name of greenwashing, as it faces ongoing allegations from its remote customer service representatives of inadequate pay and attempts to thwart a unionised movement.
The Californian company purports a message of radical transparency and since its launch in 2010 has been lauded for its transparent approach to listing its suppliers and their relations.
As the firm looks to settle an ongoing worker dispute, a brand spokesperson told Ecotextile News: “We are working quickly to improve their experience, including offering full-time roles and creating a clearer path for continued conversation. We're working to do better.”
Remake has, however, now called into question the authenticity of Everlane’s narrative of social sustainability, suggesting it may well be a façade as it “reveals no details on its website about its compliance audit, making the brand’s proclamation that it aims for each factory to score a ‘90 or above’ essentially meaningless.”
