DHAKA - Safety experts fear lives could be put at risk in Bangladesh unless the fire safety sections of proposed new national building safety standards - which affect garment factories along with other structures - are strengthened.
Experts at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and the Nirapon safety monitoring organisation have released a joint statement after a meeting held to discuss the draft new Bangladesh National Building Code (BNBC).
It followed a series of tragic incidents in December including the death of a woman in an explosion at a garment factory in the capital city of Dhaka. Ten people were also killed in a fire at a fan factory and another 17 died in a blaze at a plastics factory, both near the city, that same month.
