In the last - for now - of our examinations of some of the more incredible claims widely quoted about our industry's environmental impact, we look at the report that 25 per cent of the world’s pesticides are used for growing cotton.
This is perhaps one of the most commonly quoted statistics about the textile industry and has been repeated by a variety of media, industry organisations and even brands.
This number stems from research dating back to the 1990s when the production and use of pesticides in cotton agriculture was at its peak. But even now, that same figure is still being misquoted.
