LONDON – The Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) has reported a record year in 2018, as 93 retailer and brand members sourced more than one million metric tonnes of Better Cotton, which it says is enough to make approximately 1.5 billion pairs of jeans.
This marked an increase of 45 per cent over the previous year, with retailer and brand member sourcing of Better Cotton accounting for 4 per cent of global cotton consumption by the end of 2018.
Better Cotton ‘uptake’ refers to the sourcing and purchasing of more sustainable cotton in supply chains by its members – it does not refer to the cotton present in the finished textile.
