Is the textile industry really getting anywhere when it comes to reducing and then measuring its greenhouse gas emissions? And with experts in the energy sector asserting that CO2 emissions from textile powerhouse China will continue to rise – despite efforts to decarbonise – is the electrification of textile production just wishful thinking?
Despite high-profile climate commitments, new research published by the UK campaign group Fashion Revolution says that 53% of the world’s biggest 250 fashion brands still lack firm decarbonisation targets.
The campaigners also say that 45% of these brands provide no indication of the emissions footprint of the raw materials they use, nor the volume of clothes they produce. And that just one in 10 of those brands studied discloses full details of their energy procurement policies within their supply chains.
