Wishful climate thinking – now in textile scope

A severe heatwave in northern Vietnam dried up rivers that supply key hydropower plants, which forced textile and garment manufacturers to fire up diesel generators to continue operations – blowing away customers climate targets in the process.

Earlier this year, the industrial parks of Vietnam’s northern provinces suffered rolling power cuts as electricity consumption surged amid a heatwave that dried up hydropower reservoirs normally used to keep the lights on and the textile industry up and running.

Son La hydropower reservoir, the largest of its kind in the country, reached record low water levels resulting in turbine closures for the very first time.
