OSLO - New research highlights the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) and automation to help target extended producer responsibility (EPR) schemes to make fashion companies pay towards the cost of treating textile waste.
The Norwegian study examined more than 3,000 discarded garments in a bid to determine their condition, fibre composition, age and country of production, as well as identify the brands responsible for their production.
They were aiming to test the viability of a proposed variation of EPR - targeted producer responsibility (TPR) - which would mean that the levies paid by brands would depend on the durability of their products.
