BRISTOL – Mechanically recycled polyester is no more likely than virgin polyester to lead to microfibre fragmentation from apparel, according to new research from the Microfibre Consortium (TMC).
However, the organisation says the impacts of chemically recycled polyester are less clear, due to a lack of data, and it is calling on the industry to increase testing, so further analysis can be undertaken.
Researchers used the TMC's test method on 251 fabrics submitted from 36 brands and retailers for the research into the microfibre impacts of recycled polyester (rPET), compared to those of virgin polyester, in apparel.
