FRANKFURT - A trade union and two NGOs have filed the first complaint under Germany's new Supply Chain Act against retail giants Amazon and IKEA over garment factory safety in Bangladesh.
The National Garment Workers Federation (NGWF) in Bangladesh linked up with the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights (ECCHR) and the African Women’s Development and Communication Network (FEMNET) to lodge the complaint with the German Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control (BAFA).
NGWF president and co-founder Amirul Haque Amin commented: "Ten years after Rana Plaza, there are still factories in Bangladesh producing clothes for international corporations like Amazon, IKEA or Tom Tailor, where there are hardly any safety checks. We can no longer accept this."
