NEW HAVEN - US startup Protein Evolution (PEI) is to work with fashion brand Stella McCartney in a bid to demonstrate the potential of its enzyme-based technology to recycle synthetic textiles.
From next year, PEI will turn unused polyester and nylon fabrics from previous Stella McCartney collections into "good-as-new" fibres which the brand will aim to use to produce new clothing and footwear.
Currently at pilot stage, processing up to 20 kilogrammes of fabric per batch, PEI hopes to escalate rapidly with ambitions of an industrial scale plant recycling 50,000 tonnes of synthetic textiles per year.
