GLAND – Swiss environmental non-profit the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) has published a list of chemical recycling implementation principles it believes industries tackling plastic waste should adhere to if they’re to support the circular economy.
The organisation stresses that reduction and reuse strategies should be prioritised but insists “increasing recycling will be critical in keeping materials and value circulating in the system and reducing the amount of plastic being landfilled, incinerated, or littered in nature”.
WWF has however published these principles with a word of warning, citing “significant concerns” about such technologies in that they can be energy-intensive, pose a risk to human health and won’t be capable of processing plastic beyond what mechanical recycling already achieves.
