SAN FRANCISCO – Sustainable footwear brand Allbirds has invested US$2 million in start-up Natural Fiber Welding (NFW) and is to use its plant-based leather in its shoes.
NFW has created a special version of its Mirum leather alternative - called Plant Leather - which has been fine tuned to meet the needs of Allbirds' products.
Plant Leather - made with vegetable oil, natural rubber and other bio-ingredients - is said to be NFW's most sustainable and scalable product to date - with a carbon footprint 40 times smaller than leather and 17 times smaller than synthetic alternatives.
