URUMQI - Officials in China's Xinjiang region - which is at the centre of allegations of forced labour involving imprisoned Uyghur Muslims - have raised eyebrows by publishing a social responsibility report praising its huge cotton industry.

Western brands have been pulling out of the region while legislators have been acting to ban or restrict imports of cotton from Xinjiang which supplies more than a fifth of the world's cotton.

Up to two million Uyghur Muslims and other ethnic minorities have been imprisoned in the Xinjiang region where many are allegedly used as forced labour in the cotton, and other, industries.
