BRUSSELS - Businesses - including fashion giant H&M and home furnishing chain IKEA - have joined a new alliance with politicians and environmentalists in calling for an EU-wide green recovery strategy focused on sustainability after the COVID-19 pandemic.
A total of 180 European politicians, business leaders, MEPs and environmental activists have signed up to the Green Recovery Alliance which urges Europe to develop a "new model of prosperity" based on sustainability, the protection of biodiversity, and the transformation of the EU's agri-food system.
"The crisis is still ongoing, but we will see the light at the end of the tunnel, and by fighting together, we will beat the virus," says a statement by the alliance led by French MEP Pascal Canfin who chairs the European Parliament's committee on environment.
