GENEVA – The International Labour Organisation (ILO) estimates that upwards of 25 million jobs could be lost around the world as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, and has called for an internationally coordinated policy response to mitigate the economic effects of the outbreak.
In its preliminary assessment note, COVID-19 and the world of work: Impacts and responses, the ILO urges the standard of response that the global financial crisis of 2008/09 was met with.
The workers’ rights organisation believes three foundational pillars must be addressed to this end: protecting workers in the workplace, stimulating the economy and employment, and supporting jobs and incomes.
