NEW DELHI - Blatant safety violations, including locked doors, barred windows and blocked staircases, prevented workers from escaping a garment factory fire which claimed 43 lives in New Delhi, according workers' rights campaigners.
The Clean Clothes Campaign (CCC) said the "manifestly unsafe" factory highlighted the urgent need for enforcement of fire and building safety regulations and credible safety monitoring in India.
And it said brands which had been sourcing garments from the factory should be made to contribute to adequate compensation payments for the victims and their families.
