BRUSSELS – The European Commission has kicked off a consultation process for the potential revision of its Green Public Procurement (GPP) criteria for textiles. The aim of the new process is to determine if the existing criteria are still relevant and to what extent they should be revised, restructured or even removed in light of the revised set of EU Ecolabel textile criteria published in June 2014.
The EC says that from the background research in support of revision of both the EU Ecolabel and GPP criteria, two broad focus areas for environmental improvement were identified. Namely, these are: (1) Textile fibre origin and (2) Chemical use in textile production.
